The Pathway to Forever
Crystal & Michael
The Path to Forever
The two first met on Bumble in May 2018. On their first date, Mike took Crystal to a lovely brunch followed by a walk-through Fredericksburg – stretching the walk as much as they could so that the date would last longer! He even joined her later that night for a poker night with her friends.
Fast forward to August 2019 when the couple (who had been inseparable since their first date) was taking another romantic walk alongside a river. Except this time, it was just outside of Dobbs which happens to be Crystal’s maiden name! After their walk, Mike dropped down on one knee and asked Crystal for forever. She says, “It was very intimate and beautiful and he looked so cute…How could I resist?”
Inspiration & Design
After choosing Fredericksburg as the location for their big day, and considering Crystal’s German heritage, the two decided to incorporate German details into their wedding while modernizing them to fit their style. Some examples include:
- The venue looks like a German castle.
- The “guest log” comes from a German tradition where a new couple at their reception will saw the end of a tree stump together as their first team effort.
- Our cake was inspired by German architecture.
- And our gifts to each other were an authentic beer stein for him and a cuckoo clock for me, both from Germany.
“Our wedding was planned for June 20, 2020, and we had to cancel/delay it in March due to the pandemic. Then in April, I lost my job because of, you guessed it, the pandemic! Bummer. We decided that we needed to go ahead and elope and do the reception later. So that’s what we did! On April 23, 2020, we got married in the courthouse, just us (and, surprise, the local news who broadcasted it a week later).
We thought maybe we would do our big reception in October, but realized it was still too soon for our family to travel. So we ended up doing a little micro-reception at our venue on our one-year anniversary, and it was a LOT of fun.
While it wasn’t what we set out for in the beginning, we made the best of these strange times!”
Crystal says, “All of my vendors were gracious through all the changes and produced amazing art to support me on my day. While I’m not surprised that each of them hit grand slams, it still had me in awe on the day. They are the most amazing people you could ever hope to have with you on such an important day. They are all perfect.
Venue: Altstadt Brewery
Altstadt is a very cool brewery with beautiful details throughout. It feels modern and old at the same time, which is us.
Photographer: Hannah Charis
Hannah did a fantastic job on our family photos in 2018, so of course she got the call when it was time to go all in.
Cake: Feathers & Frosting
I discovered while searching for great cake design. Her cakes are pure art and I felt inspired just looking through the pictures. Then when I described how I wanted to pay homage to German architecture, she came back with a design that I thought was perfect. Then when we did a cake tasting, I was totally sold. DELICIOUS!
Florist: Merci Bouquet
Merci Bouquet was much the same in that she was easy to talk to and interpreted what I was saying with ease, while elevating it. We met to select flowers together in Austin and she was so sweet and smart! I love her!”
Words of Advice
“Relax and enjoy the experience. Choose people who listen to your vision and then get out of their way and let them create.”
