How They Met

San Antonio holds so many memories for Devan and Andrés. This couple met at St. Mary’s University through a mutual friend. The two dated all through college and even lived and studied abroad together in Spain. After college, they were dating long distance between Houston and San Antonio while Andrés finished his masters degree. Now they have both lived in Houston since 2017.

The Proposal

While the couple was traveling to visit family, Andrés suggested that they stay overnight in San Antonio so that they could go to the farmer market at the pearl (which is one of Devan’s favorite things to do). That morning they made all her favorite stops throughout the market and then Andrés asked if she wanted to walk by the river. As the couple walked across the foot bride, Andrés stopped in the middle and dropped down to one knee. All Devan can really remember is saying “YES!” and lots of crying. Next thing she knows, there’s cheering and clapping coming from a photographer that Andrés had secretly hired to document the whole thing. Not only that, but she was also surprised to find out her mom and sister were waiting to have brunch at The Hotel Emma’s Supper and were surprised with a dream reservation at The Hotel Emma that night to celebrate the engagement.

The Wedding

The Theme:

Once the couple got everything together, Devan coined their theme as a “modern, romantic, garden wedding”

The Venue:

Devan loves flowers, so getting married at the San Antonio Botanical Garden was the very first decision they made for their wedding. They literally signed their contract the day the found out about the opening of the Betty Kelso Center.

The Decor:

Devan chose Freesia Designs because she felt like they were able to take all of Devan’s crazy ideas and put them into something beautiful from the very first meeting.

The HMUA:

JAX Studio was recommended by many friends and her photographer as well. The whole team was incredibly kind and understood Devan’s vision. They made here feel beautiful and glamorous without feeling like a different person.

Unique Elements

Devan and Andrés’ original wedding was just with their parents due to COVID. In 2021, they were able to get all their friends and family together at San Antonio Botanical Gardens to celebrate, almost exactly a year after their original date. They loved that the Frida Kahlo exhibit was going on at the garden so their guest got to experience something unique.

Words of Advice

“Don’t overwhelm yourself with vendors- do your research, ask people you actually know, or reach out to people who had great weddings that you really enjoyed! If it feels right it probably is! The day goes by so fast so really focus on the things that are important for you to enjoy the day!” – Devan and Andrés
